cleaning question for you guys and gals 3 years ago #36938

ok i have a delima of sorts.... I have an old school 90 gallon tank that has no seperation in the tank just a piece of glass for the center but i have this prob where i get this flim on the glass from where the plasic meets the glass i have tried to use just simple water and scrubing pads but it never clears out i know if i were to use chemical cleaners such as clr would do the job but i fear using it since well water still drips off of it into my tank and i dont want to use it or any other chemicals cause well the obvious i love my oscars so if you guys have any ideas that will clean up this white residue (or film) i would like it since i like my tanks to be clean and well my oscar tank is my show piece and not my planted tank. believe it or not my living room has the oscars and my bedroom is my planted tank.lol
I have lost my mind be back when I find it, maybe.

Can you scrape it with a razor?

I have very hard water and get the buildup too. Hazeee has it right, a razor is the only thing I know of that will get it off safely. Hopefully somebody else here has a way of doing it quick and easy and we'll all learn. I'm pretty sure you can use vinegar if you rinse it well. I've also read you can use clorox but also rinse it well but I'm unsure about that one so don't do it unless somebody that really knows tells you. You can google "how to clean hard water stains" and see what you get.
If you can't beat them...arrange to have them beaten!

Some other suggestion were lime or lemon juice. I have lime juice so I'll try it and post my results.

hard water and soft water is not the way how the fishes feels it,
it is the quality of the water... ideally, the water should be soft,
even in the household use but there are circumstance wherein we can
not avoid hard water especially in a place where water is not
processed for household use.

so its possible to have hard water and good perimeters and soft water and bad perimeters?
im just a bit confused lol.
my mum lost a tank full of fish one day not long after she introduced new ones from her LFS, she said she wanted her money back and they said bring in a sample of your water and well test it, then if its good u can get money back because fish must have died from something they gave her.

they said it was probably too hard and thats what would have killed them.
other perimeters were fine
