Hi guys:)

Just a quick question..

I was just wondering what would be better for my 55 gallon tank a fluval 305(canister filter) or 3 aquaclear 50's.

You opinions would be greatly appreciated:)

Definitely the fluval canister filter. The aquaclear 50 is rated for 20 US gallons so having three will just give you enough filtration for your tank. I always recommend having more filtration than you need when keeping Oscars. I've never used aqua clear filters and I don't think they sell them in this country. However, when I look at them, I am looking at a really cheap filter that should be only used on a small community tank, not with large messy fish. The canister filter is rated higher than your tank. It will also be much more efficient at removing waste. You will also get much more biological filtration and it. That's my opinion anyway.

They don't sell these filters here in the United Kingdom but I heard people talk fondly of them. I don't think these type of filters are made for big messy fish so keep an eye on it and you may have to clean the mechanical filtration quite a lot.

As for the filter oxygenating the water, this happens much the same as a waterfall, as the water enters the tank, it creates oxygen. Some people make the mistake of submerging the outlet pipe so that it isn't actually causing any surface agitation. This is when problems can arise with fish not getting enough oxygen. So when you install the filter, make sure the spray bar (or whatever the water comes out of back into the tank) is slightly above the water, or little bit of both.
