TOPIC: Powerheads

Powerheads 2 years, 9 months ago #48906

Any thoughts on power heads in an Oscar tank?

Currently I have my return pump from my sump exiting in the top right of my tank pointing diagonally to the front left of the tank. I was wondering whether I should put a powerhead down the bottom (in order to stir up all the grit)?

If so where would be the best place to put it?
New to the whole Oscars thing..
Setup:
4' x 2' x 2' Tank with 100L Sump filtration

For the best result you are best to place the power head at the same end as your input to your pump. it sounds wrong I know, cos if its blowing the poo the other way how dose it end in the pump. current. pure and simple the current returns the flow from the other end back to the input of the pump after bouncing off the tank. this will work with powerful powerheads and medium tanks up to 150g. larger tanks you may need to play around with placement.

basically, power head pump is meant to stir the water in the tank,
unless you are using the overhead filter box. most of the time,
it employs the bubble tuber to create bubbles and add oxygenation.
that is why it is usually put 6 inches or less below the water
label, not at the bottom, to avoid crap roving around too long.

but i do do use power head as my main filtering pump
(with modification) cheaper and very effective. 110 gal
tanks has 2 x 2200LPH powerhead that runs like this.
it cost me US$9.00 each.

Nice handy work paul and good recycle of the bottles.))))) The best way to remove wast from the gravel is a vacuum syphon. be much better and cheaper than a power head. if your tank filter return is in the same corner as the out going to the filter it should pick up most wast. return at top and out going closer the bottom with about 6-8" above bottom. easy way to work out where to place the out going to filter is look where all the mess ends up. it should all be in 1 corner. you will get a bit over the tank bottom but 1 corner should end up worst than the others.

Thanks Marcus. and i have the latest modification for that
which give me more efficient filtering and polishing of water.
this is also the design that keeps my algae under check even if
the tank is directly under the sunlight the whole day.

i will post here the design of this simple DIY canister for everyone
to try. i had de-commissioned all my other filter.
