Just did some maintenance on my 110 gal tank with two 8" tiger oscars. I removed the air stone and like the calm effect. I have two power filters discharging across tank surface. Can I leave the aerator out. Penn what do you think ??????

Air stones are good for increasing the oxygen in the water, especially when it's very hot. However, they are not a necessity. Just make sure that you are causing quite a bit of surface agitation and you should be perfectly okay. You'll soon know if there isn't enough oxygen in the water, the fish will either hang around at the surface, or the water outlet, or they will constantly open and close their mouths

Oxygen naturally 'goes' into water. When fish breathe oxygen the amount in the water decreases. More oxygen then naturally goes into the water. The problem is when the fish breathe air quicker than it goes into the water. The thing that limits how quickly the oxygen goes into the water is surface area

Now think of a semi circle. The curved bit is longer than the straight bit. Now think of lots of curved bits sat next to each other compared to a straight line. Curved will be much longer. Now imagine the same but in length and width with half balls. The straight one is your tank with a calm still surface and the half balls is your tank with the surface rippling and moving. So you get more oxygen quicker with a bigger surface area and that is a surface that is rippling and moving.

All an air stone does is to ripple the surface so you dont need one as long as the surface isn't still but is moving. If you don't like the air stone adjust the outlet of you filters so it ripples the surface and/or use a power head

Personally i like the look of the bubbles an air stone produces
