Ok, I know when it comes to Oscars you can never have too much filtration.. But I am wondering, I was at a local pond store today and they have some HUGE filters.

I was looking at a filter and pump that would do 1500 gallons per hour. I would love to have this on my Oscar tank, But will I run into a problem with ripped fins and so forth from the huge current?

They are no more expensive than another FX5, So what do you think?

It would go on the tank that is known on this site as the Sieve. 122 US Gallons

if your already using an fx5 on the sieve then i would suggest getting a smaller hob filter like an aquaclear 110 to supplement with the mechanical fitration. the ac 110 moves 500 gph and would be an adequate addition to an fx5.

jsut my opinion
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

I do have a HOB also, but I am looking at "just in case" I need a quick Cycled canister. I can move the FX5 to the 170 and run duel canisters on there, but I was thinking a 15X turn over per hour might be TOO MUCH!

there are so many ways to offset the increase flow rate:
increasing the volume of the filtering media constrict the
flow of water, thus, you increase the collection of particles,
and reduce the discharge rippling. to much current is dangerous
to fishes too. (as you have mentioned, ripped-off fins)

most of the time, pond pump is just simple submersible pump, attach to
a DIY filtering system like a swimming pool filter... they work effectively
at low wattage. if you can get a picture of simple schematic layout for it,
i can be at your service for evaluation, free of charge...

Thanks Paul, What i was looking at was a pump that goes in the bottom of the tank, to a canister filter. It looks like any other canister but doesn't have a pump.. The canister is rated for up to 1500 gallons per hour. Then you buy the pump to match. I hust wonder if it will be too much for these two oscars in the 122.

if thats the case you dont have to put a 1500gph pump on it. you can put a smaller one i would think.

A lot of pond filters work by pumping the water to the filter which is above the top of the water and then the water drop back into the pond. This is often impracticable for as house tank
