TOPIC: Cloudy Water

Cloudy Water 2 years, 7 months ago #54968

Hey guys and gals, So Im new to this whole Oscar keeping hobby. Ive had mine for about 6 months and I absolutely love him. He has grown so much since I purchased him. I do have one problem though. I cannot keep the tank water clear. He is in a 55 gallon tank with a Aqua tech power filter 30-60 but the water is always cloudy. Can anyone help me out with getting my water clear. Ive tried dissolving tablets and some Tetra aqua qater clarifier, they work alittle but the water still isnt completely clear. Thanks in advance -Eric

Can you test your water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and post the actual results.

How many gallons is your filter rated for. You should have total filtration rated for 110g tank. When did you last clean your filter and has the flow slowed up recently

You could have a bacterial bloom. Filter aid will help cure this but you need to find the cause

Do you have any tankmates and how much do you feed. You should only feed once a day and only what he will eat in 2 mins
I can't get no sleep

ive run teh same 55 gallon with a aquatech 30-60 with zero problems as far as quaality of water go. your either over feeding, or have an algae/bacterial bloom going. is it cloud gray/white or cloudy green?

pack your filter loosely with some cotton balls, let run for 1 day, then remove the cottonballs, and repeat if nessisary. i have the same setup you do. this works for me on my koi tank. running the same filter and tank. also run the same on my oscar's 55, but it stays clear. change your water regularly. once per week, 25-50%. this helps alot.

How often do you change your water and how do you go about doing it? It is amazing how much better the water can look after a nice water change.

two things are possible:
1) you have too compact media that the water passes at the outer layer,
not the entire media;

2) to much media in the system wherein it causes the restricted flow
of water, thus reducing the turn-over
