I have a AquaClear 110 HOB filter that came with a second hand tank i brought over 1.5yrs ago. I didnt test it when i got it cause i just wanted to use canisters on my tank but kept it just in case i needed a spare filter, it came in handy a few months back when my canister sprang a leak. It worked fine but its dam noisy, it rattles real bad and would drive me crazy if it was running al the time. So tonight out of boadom i pulled it apart and put it back together and had a general play around with it to see if i could shut it up. It still rattles but when i pulled the propeller looking thing out it did nothing.
Are these types of filters always that loud?

just a couple of pics so u can see what i was talking about.

is that impeller "loose"?? like u might try replacing it and see if you can get a tigher fit on the motor assembly. that might be a large part of your noise there.

The impeller is that peice i removed in the second pic right? Its is a tiny bit loose. I'll look out for em next time i'm in my LSF, how much are they worth? Its not urgent but if i ever need to use that filter it would be nice to know it wont wake the neighbours.

Thanks

ya impeller is in the pic. the shaft wears then is makes the impeller wear so both should be replaced. the shaft is sometimes tough to pull out even with pliers. if you cant get it out take the motor to the store and get them to pull it out. shaft and impeller i think was around $20 for my 500. they gave me the wrong shaft so i have to return it. best to take your stuff in to get the right ones.

it is probably the shaft that has worn on the filter. i have four ac 110 and the only maintenance that has been needed on them is replacement of the impellor shafts. when they start to get noisy i change the shaft and they are quiet again.

Now I finally know what a Aquaclear looks like.
I hear a lot of Brands mentioned but for the most part LFS around here have different Brands in store.

please check if there are two mini rubber bushing on both ends of the
shaft. there should be, otherwise, it will vibrate irritably to the point
it will not deliver anymore.

could be $10, i dont remember, i bought other things the same day. i would replace both, the shaft and impeller. you wernt running that filter so who knows how long it was left like that before you got it. so impeller hole might be out of shape now.
