Hi, I am running a fluval 304

This is not my picture but as you can see it has 3 trays with 6 compartments.

I am wondering what media I should be stocking it with?
Right now I have the pre-filter cylinder things, and carbon.

I am thinking of scrapping the carbon and adding something else... any ideas?

I was thinking of these Bio-Max Rings

Replacing the carbon and filoling that comp with onlt a slab of foam shouldt do the trick.
Those ceramic rings are good, cuz they have a large surface for the BB to set on.

I've also seen something like peat granules.

i also use a 304 as additional filtration on one of my cichlid tanks and what i have done is to fill the bottom tray with prefilter, the second with bio max and in the top tray i also use bio max and fiber floss. this combo has worked well for me on my tank.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Peat is for lowering your Ph level or to create a black water effect, by the tannins in the peat.
That's why I don't use that stuff.
IMO it's not meant for Oscars.

lol i dont mean to one up you or thread hyjack, but my xp4 has 4 trays, and when i got it it only came with media to fill 3 of them up, with 2 dif kinds of foam (fine and coarse), some rena "bio-chem stars"

a big pouch of bio-chem zorb

so that left me with 1 tray open, so i got a couple boxes of fluval ceramic rings

im going to leave the bio-chem zorb in for now, but i intend to replace it later down the road, likely with more of the ceramic rings. not sure really what route i intend to take.

I think I will do that bio max/fiber floss thing, so I can mix it up a bit.

Thanks for all the quick help!

you know i almost got one of those, but the two of these together run a higher rating than that one and with my dual over flows i thought it might be better to run two than try to plumb both overflows to one filter, it just makes the plumbing alot easier and it gives me redundancy, one of these is still rated like 53 gallons over my tanks size.

i just have to take care and make sure the tank is perfectly level so they both work lol. nothing at this house is perfectly level lol.
