When I get ready to clean my sponge filter what is the best way to do so without harming the good bacteria?

Clean it in Dirty tank water! Not in fresh tap water!

Nickisue is spot on. Fill a bucket with tank water and rinse the sponge in that.

X3....and don't use any detergent. just squeeze it in tank water in a bucket.

i have a friend who used tank water in a bucket and put some detergent to removed
brown color of the sponge. the following day, all his fishes were dead and blame me
for that (failure to specify not to use any detergent).. :angry: :angry: :angry:
