Hi dear guys. Would a Rena Xp2 be big enough for one lone oscar (no other fish at all) in a 55 gallon? I've got a chance to pick one up for $80. Thanks. Jewel

That filter will move 300 Gallons per hour, That is over 5 times turn over! I would say you will be ok with that but, it wouldn't hurt to maybe add a HOB! You can never have too much filtration!

x2

it should provide adequate filtration on its own but i also would add another filter just to be on the safe side.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Aargh. I'm trying to stick with just the cannister, and not have an HOB because I'm trying to get my little house so it doesn't sound like a factory. So, my choices:

1. Add Rena 2, but also noisy HOB. (ugh)
2. Add Rena 2, but do more regular water changes. (ugh)
3. Get a bigger cannister. (yikes)

Opinions? Thanks much. I live for your words, always.

from the time i started fish keeping, either for food or hobby, i had used a
lot of different kinds of pumps.... and being a technical guy, i keep on
doing some modification and experiment and my experience can attest the ff:
1) FX5 = top of the line but very expensive. although the cost can commensurate
the savings on cost for water change, man-hour for maintenance and the elegance
you've got for having it.

2) other type of pumps will give different benefits as to :matching with the tank size,
budget available, space consideration and availability in the area.

3) what do i have now are just power head, modified to fit my requirements. cheap,
easy to maintain, efficient, very silent, and readily available in any LFS. in my
110 gal tank, i have only 2 X 2400 lph power head while the 90 gal has a 1 x2400
and 1 x 2200 and they had been running for more than 3 years now except 1 which is
already 5 years old.

Currently i have 2 rena filstar xp2s running on my 100gal. I like em alot. Keeps water crystal clean. For your 55gal mayb two xp1s would be good?? although i dont think the xp1s have as much room for bio media and wut not... or maybe an xp2 plus an xp1 would probably be more than enough for oscar in 55gal....

The more the filtration the better. Im running an rena xp4 in a 65gal and i still dont think its enough filtration for these beasts. I am slightly overstocked to be fair with 2 O's. Planning on upgrading in the future. But as rena goes mine is decent so far. can get a little noisy when needed to be cleaned, have it in a bedroom so 1 once a week (rena recommend 1 once a month!)cleaning or i can't sleep lol. But least it proves its doing its job.
