Hey I have currently got a Rena XP4 running in a 350ltr and the noise it makes is so annoying and loud. I think it is trapped air and I have tried everything to get it out. It it fairly new (couple of months old) and i have experienced it being quiet. I have it in a bedroom and i used to be able to sleep with it. Now i need pillows of my head and the filter lol. Any suggestions out there?

i have had an xp4 getting seeded on a 55 for my big tank when i fill it soon, and it doesnt make a sound! its waaay quieter than my hob. your probably right about the trappped air, did you try tilting the filter? its possible you maybe sucking air somewhere too, check for leaks on the inlet side line. i know they come with some rather thin plastic parts for the inlet and outlet, your probably sucking air at one of those plastic on plastic fittings.

Yh that could be a possibility actually I'll have a look tonight. On your rena as you can see inside the cannister, is the cannister full of water or there is a slight gap at the top. I tried manually filling the hole cannister but when i do it leaks. Self priming always leaves a gap.

LOL i used to actually and i moved it to the other side of the tank. Turned it off recently to see if it still was the problem, but i don't think it is at the moment. I think its the rubbish rena self priming. Thanks for the suggestion though. Might dismantle the whole thing thing and put it back together.

i am with Win on this. check any possible air leak along the suction line.
it draws air in and accumulate at the chamber causing the noise.

It sounds like air in the filter. Try emptying it and refilling
I can't get no sleep

i had a similar drama a few days back, mine sounded like the dish-washer, sooo noisey, i lefted it off , went to bed ...woke up around 9 hours later and flicked it on and it fixed itself, im assuming it had to be air trapped..hope this helps..

Better do not make that into a habit.
9 hours can kill all bacteria and leave you with a deadly ammonia spike after turning it back on....

This may not be true, you might not get ammonia spike. I have a friend who has a community tank. The neighbours were having work done on the driveway and they went through the power cable. My friend had no power for 13 hours. I told him to test to make sure he didnt have to cycle his tank again. He had no ammonia or nitrite present (this was 24 hours after power came back on). I think the important thing is the bacteria in the filter remained in water

I would like to test this but i dont have a spare tank or fish i dont mind if they died
I can't get no sleep
