TOPIC: Holiday maintenance - Nitrates

Holiday maintenance - Nitrates 2 years, 5 months ago #63761

I am going on holidays for 3 weeks.

I have arranged for my fish to be fed every second day (which should easily be enough), however there is no way that the person who is feeding the fish would be capable / willing to do a water change for me.

So I was wondering whether anyone here could recommend any products that would assist in keeping nitrates down for this period of time.

So far I have looked at;

API - Nitra-zorb
Biowish Biobombs

both which claim to reduce nitrates. Cant seem to find any reliable reviews on either though. Has anyone had any experience with these/ other products that will help keep nitrates in check over this period.

(I really do need something as tank is quite heavily stocked and it will go out of control if I left it for this time period)

Thanks

i would suggest you do it this way:
1) do large water change a day before you leave;
2) ask your friend to feed them on the fourth day and 4 days thereafter.

less feedings means lesser bioloads, a higher chance of survival.
however, make sure you do not have small fishes that will fit to
oscar's mouth, otherwise, they will be gone when you come back.

i would feed less to as Paul suggested. on return test nitrates. assuming they are very high I would still do small changes but more frequent. say 25% every other day. fish can become accustom to poor water. sudden changes are harder to cope with than smaller alterations. high nitrates for a short while shouldn't do to much harm if any at all.
