Has anyone seen this type of sump filter set up? I am more interested in the inside of the tank part. I'm all set with how the stuff underneath is set up. There are 2 tubes inside this black case.. intake and output. Then there is a piece that sits ontop of the output that branches off into 2 sections - a short pipe (off to the left) and a long pipe (off to the right).

If you have experience in this.. please let me know!

Full tank view ....

I cannot say I have seen anything exactly the same as that but they all work in basically the same way. The water needs to drain out of the tank, and then come back in. So have a very close look and look where the water is exiting the tank, and then look where it is coming back in again. So you have pipe work leaving from your tank down to your sump, then you have pipe work going from your sump to your pump back into your tank.

Penn, I'm sure you guys are so tired of hearing about this but I am really trying to make my other half happy. When you look at the pic, the tube on the left is the one that sucks the water into the sump. The one on the right with the attachment is the one that pushes it back out. The water that gets sucked into the tube sounds like water gurgling down a pipe. I'm trying, desperately, to find out how to silence that somehow. I don't think I can add more water to the tank because then there is too much water in the sump and it overflows. A bigger hole for the pipe? I just don't get it. When we looked at this tank it wasn't loud at all - just the hum of the motor.

I promise I will stop posting about this .. thought I'd give it one more shot !

my tank has the same thing only my inlet pipe is down at the bottom of the wier instead of up to the top, i keep it completly full of water and packed that whole thing with sponges, its like an enormous prefilter it seems to be working quite well.

what mine looked like before plumbing.

only difference i can tell is the void in yours just holds water, i would immagine some nasty gunk settles in the bottom of that baby right there lol. mine uses the space for a prefilter. also its totally silent. if you can just take that inlet pipe off the bulkhead at the bottom of the wier and put an inlet screen on it. then u can add some sponges for the water to fall onto and you get a wet/dry type filter and it makes it quieter just something i kinda figured out thru trial and error.

hi, it seems like the water level HAS to be above the top level of the inlet pipe, or the system wont work... it may also be that there is some sort of air lock in the system, not having any experience of this set up I'm not sure if this has to be an air free set up....

if its gurgling I would try adding a bit of water in the tank, if the sump overflows then maybe take some water out of the sumo FIRST, then add water to the tank, THEN start the pump running, so keeping all levels the same..

i think this is a problem with how full the sump is when the pump is started and how full the tank is... as the tank level has to be above the top of the ipe, I'd say by at least 1cm...

not sure if this will help, but aything is worth a try..

if this doesnt make sense pop on the chat and i'll try and explain what i'm thinking more...

I don't remember where I saw it but I've seen a couple people use a piece that slips on top of the intake pipe that kind of "muffles" the noise of the water going in. I've never used a sump before though so I couldn't tell you what that piece is called but figure some other people might know what i'm talking about.

Win... I tried to catch you online and take you to the chat room... !

Your idea makes a lot of sense and I can only imagine what is growing in there!!! Ewww..

One of my ?? is how do you deal with turning the filter off? That whole area will drain into the sump chambers right? Do you run a really low water level in the chambers to allow room for power outages etc?

Hope we can catch each other on at the same time.

the pipe going to the left and right is the discharge point where the other one is the
overflow pipe. during power failure, the overflow stop at that level and will run again
when power resume.

Win wrote:

i won't do that...very dangerous against flooding in time of power failure.... the
main reason why in a pre-bored tank, the over flow pipe is at the same level with
the discharge pipe to avoid overflowing. when the power stop, the discharge stop,
thus the over flow stop too. this is why in those tank using sump but do not have
a pre-bored fittings put a hole in the over flow pipe to stop the gravity flow
during power failure.

seems theres been a bit of confusion on my end. i dont use a sump, it goes to a canister, one setup on each end.

and a canister doesn't overflow in case of power failure

can you imagine what would happen if you remove that overflow pipe and the whole
tank drain in the sump...

OK... clarification time... this is a sump! LOL.. thanks for trying Win.

Tony.. the idea we discussed did not work - it sucked the cotton stuff all the way down to the sump. Good thought though...... back to the drawing board! But not tonight, my PS3 just died and now I'm not happy. Won't stay connected to the internet. Done with things failing... going to have a drink and then bed!
