I just opened my fx5--WOW. Two things, the owners manual says that fluval biomax rings need to be replaced every 3 months. Is that what you guys do? Second ,I plan on using only bio max media in all 3 trays,should I put the blue filter pad on top of the first basket or on top of the third basket(if not then where)?

i have a couple of fx5's and if you mean the ceramic rings,
then i was under the impression they last until they become brittle,
as for placement of media, then you can put the pads where ever you want,
i also added ammonia media to mine and polishing pads,
so as i say whatever and wherever suits you

i have all three of the baskets on my fx5s filled with bio max and i use a fine filter pad on the top of the bottom tray. works fine for me.......

X2 this is what you want. forget the blue pad you have foam pre filter all the way around the outside you don't need more foam. A polishing pad as Chris has is a luxury but could be worth it. if you are short of media you could throw the blue foam in the top basket. how long do they last???? i have some over 5yrs old still fine, so No don't throw away after 3months send to me
