It's Me again!

Since I have been keeping my oscars I tend to keep the light on most of the time because I love watching them.
I have it on all night while sleeping or should I say
when I should be sleeping. I don't sleep well so atleast everytime I wake up I can watch the fish
Anyways, do you think this is harming the fish at all
or is it "OK".

Thank you!

Remember that fish do sleep like any other animal. They don't sleep that well if it's very bright. Turn the lights out at night and let them have a good sleep. You'll find that when you turn the lights out and all is in darkness, fish will settle down quite quickly. Oscars often huddle together when they are sleeping, sometimes they just hang in midwater. But fish do sleep so please do turn the lights out for a few hours.

Also remember that Oscars prefer subdued lighting, they come from places where it is not that light, under mangroves and overhanging trees so in my opinion, the lighting shouldn't be too bright anyway

If you leave your lights on too much you may end up with an algea problem. As vbaby says the lights are for your benefit not your oscars. I have my lights on between 6pm and 10pm. I used to have them on from midday to 10pm and i ended up with hair algea. When i reduced the hours to 4 it took quite a while for the hair algea to die off

As OFL says your oscars need to sleep so turn your lights off at night

My tank lighting is only on for 2-3 hours in the evening also. Also never had any major algae problems. Nothing that cant be cleaned up in a few minutes during weekly water change.

Noticed an ovetank illuminaire from arcadia that I am going to get for my next tank that allows for three tubes. Two normal daylight ones and a blue moonlight one.

It also has individual switches so you can switch of the normal ones and put on the moonlight in the evening.

See picture, has a lovely effect. Have read on forums that you can watch your fish sleeping as such.

I actually have 3 lights on my oscar tank. The blue(moon light) light comes on at 4pm till 6pm, then the 2 normal lights come on at 6pm till 10pm, then the blue light comes on from 10pm to midnight. The blue moonlight light is actually very effective and looks good but the fish dont sleep till it goes off. A moonlight light is not neccesary but it does look good, it supposed to represent the light of the moon (the name is a dead giveaway)

I know some triple light set-ups have different lights that put out different light waves ... it is to help the plants grow and thrive through its different phases. Some plants need different sections of the spectrum, some need different sections for initial growth, normal life, and blossoming times.

Other than that, the rest is for owner enjoyment ... being able to see your fish clearly, especially if there is a lot of color (SA Cichlids, SW tanks, Bettas, and guppies come to mind). Though more lighting from the side, not the top seems to work best (at least for pictures in my experience).

If you don't have live plants, you don't need a lot of light to see in the tank, and you have light sensitive fish, I would say those extra lights won't serve you much use, unless the light you like blows out, then you still have lighting until you can pick up another bulb

Oh, one thing I just remembered, at least one of the Hikari cichlid foods (Bio-Gold+), claims it is a formula for better color in fish that don't receive UV rays, so if the light puts out UV, it may help promote better coloration in fish if I understand their claim properly. It seems there are a lots of factors that influence coloration, I wouldn't be surprised if there was more
