So in my hunt for larger, more suitable tanks, my small(not for long) Oscar, still surviving in the 30, thanks not only to my over-protective attention, but that of a few of my roommates when I'm gone. As of yesterday, I have a 55g to set up as I wait on the rumored 180g to be cleaned and ready for me to pick-up. Buddy's brother gave up and just let everything die...what a dick...but that means he's taking the tank away, and I am laying claim on it. Could still be awhile though.

So the 55g is really a transition tank for the Oscar. I'd like to start the new tank cycle today, as for the first time since the surprise fish in a jar, I have a chance to get my water perfect FIRST!

Cleaning out the 55g now. Gonna hit up the petstore for a filter, heater, hood, etc.
Suggestions and recommendations are helpful and appreciated.

Looking at the fluval g3 and g6 still, but they're only for 80g and 160g, so am I correct to assume that as cool as they are, they're not for this tank?

I searched a bit for a "tutorial" like thread for the cycle process, but maybe I'm just impatient, because I haven't yet found it exactly, though the website IS flooded with info. to piece together quite well.

Again...suggestions, preferences, and favorite brands, types, etc...
Hit me up.

If you are going to move your oscar from the 30 to the 55 then move the oscar to the new tank with your old water AND filter. Run your old filter on the tank with your new one for a couple of months (this way you wont have to cycle) before removing the old filter (or you can run both filters on the tank). If you are going to buy a filter for the 55 then get a filter that will run on your planned bigger tank, get a FX5

Those filters g3 and g5 are stupid. Way too expensive and totally unnecessary. I would say go fx5!

Figured I'd close this one out with the update. Between substrate and filter media the tank switch went without a hitch, barring the O's little temper-tamtrum. He threw a fit, but I got him in safely. He banged himself up just a bit, but looked good as new within hours. Threw some 10 or so goldfish in with him so he could sort of "take over"...which he did, with EXTREME hostility.
Check out the hostile take over....

It starts with the 30g, then shows the 55g.

You should increase the amount of water in the tank, try to fill it as much as possible, up to the line. No point in having a 55g and not putting all the water it can take.

Done and Done. We've been sure to keep the tank full to the top since I got your post. It just took me 3 weeks to respond...cuz I'm internet lazy...
