Fluval canisters have done me really well over the years, when it comes to the fluval 404 you get two types the old style and the new style.

the old style 404 has a curved impeller blade and the new style 404 has a straight empeller blade and they are not inter changeable.

for those of you that have the old style 404(better than the new one in my opinion) know that the curved blade gets worn out and needs replacement and the downfall with this is that fluval dont manufacture them anymore.

so i was really bumbed as i really like my old style 404 and i battled my ass off to find a impellor blade.

i eventually took it too the LFS and sat on the floor in the fluval parts section and unpacked all their parts to try and match a impellor blade that i can fit into my 404.

To my surprise i found that the fluval 205 impellor unit is exactly the same as the old style 404 size, shaft diameter ect. except that it has a straight blade on it(like the new 404).i Stuck in the 404 and it fit like a glove and im now testing it on my 100g tank and it seems to be working beter than ever.

i thought id share this as i had a hell of a time to try and find a impellor blade and wasnt prepared to throw a good canister in the bin coz fluval wants me to buy a new one.

so please find below the part number for the impellor blade and assembly for the fluval 205 that works perfectly in the old style 404.

Part Number:Art#A-20111

Also fluval's have this ribbed piping that in my opinion is a problem to clean & very expensive, ive replaced it with clear tubing from the hardware store at 1 tenth of the price and it is easier to keep clean and with it being clear you can see what is going in and out of yr canister.

anyway thats my 5 cents and i hope this could be usefull to sumone else aswell.
cheers.

I think these companies should give us commission

This is not regarding the fluval. However, I was wondering is there a best way/order to place the trays in a canister filter. I have the cascade 1500's. Starting from the bottom up how would you place your media.
Things to be placed are the bio rings, carbon bag, coarse
black sponge and then the floss sponge.
Also are you supposed to have floss in the tray with the bio rings or are they "OK" by themselves to be left alone?

I'm asking because again I'm being told to do it so many different ways.

Thanks again!

Not sure how you're filters are set up but with the fluval there are two sets of foam insert on the left side of the cannister then media baskets.

All my media baskets are just full of bio rings and i have a 305 405 and fx5 on my tank all just full of bio rings.I don't use carbon unless removing meds so if i was you instead of putting carbon in there put more bio rings.

Depending on were the flow of you're water comes in,so lets say it starts at the top, filters down then up the side and out.

Ok put the coarse at the top basket then you're fine floss(under the floss in the same basket you could but more bio rings too),then put you're remaining baskets under that with bio rings.Hope that helps.

If it were me i would put the coarse sponge first so that it takes out all of the larger particles in the water and thwen the finer sponge so that tales out the smaller particles. Then you carbon to remove any chemical impurities and then the bio balls.
