i have had many oscars but this is the first time i set a tank up with well water! is there something i should do different in this case?

I would test the water before using it. You want to see if the water contains any nitrate. Well water can contain nitrates in agricultural areas. You also want to test the pH. Oscars are okay, pH level from 6.5 to 8.0. Having said that, if possible, a pH of neutral which is 7.0 is best.
