Never used it before so I couldn't honestly tell you. However, I would think it's best to address the problem as to why you're getting algae in the first place, rather than just using chemicals to try and get rid of it.

You can get increased algae growth for a number of reasons. For instance, leaving your lights on for too long, having a tank located near a window, not enough water changes, high nitrates can increase algae growth. Overfeeding, nutrients increase algae. I'll give you a tip, if the side of your tank faces towards a bright window, get some backing and stick it on there, you'll be amazed how that helps stop algae grow

If you haven't got algae, why would you want to add something to prevent it, doesn't make sense to me:) like I said, follow-through procedures and you won't have any algae, well you have a little bit but that's easy to get off.

Okay, how big is your tank? Don't even think about getting another Oscar if your tank is too small. As for fish to eat algae, there are various plecos that will do a very good job. What you have got to be really careful about is not purchasing one of the ones that can get to around two or 3 feet long. The only unfortunate part of getting the ones that don't get very big is many of them cost a lot of money. bristlenose catfish reach about 5 inches and are very good at cleaning algae, these don't ask too much. However, most shops sell them at a very small size and they do take quite a long time to grow.

Just meant to ask the same question as Penn about why you'd want to add chemicals to your water for no reason. Plus many algae killers contain copper which can build up in the tank with time, not good for the fish neither.

Siamese Algae Eaters are another species that comes to my mind for algae eating fish, haven't tried them with Oscars yet though, they get to around 6 inches and like to be kept in a group. Guess they would have to be a bit bigger though from the beginning if it's possible at all.
