I was cleaning a filter earlier this evening and one of the clips of the impeller cover broke (its a fluval 405). The made the filter unusable until i got a new impeller cover. So i took the media out of the filter and put it in my spare filter and set that up on the tank. Without a spare filter i would of been in big trouble. This is why it is a good idea to have a spare filter!!!!!!

I always ran two filters on my 125 gallon aquarium. I haven't got that any more, however I have two pumps in my sump so if one goes wrong, I've got a backup. It's not a life or death situation if your lights or heaters pack up, but you cannot do without a filter for more than a couple of hours so having a backup/spare is definitely a good idea.

i agree. i also have a spare filter in case of emergencies and on top of that i always have spare impellors, impellor shafts and cover on standby incase something happens to my main filters. i got caught once without a replacement and lost all the bio in that filter so from that experience i have learned the value of back up parts and complete filters.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

we have our filter on the circuit that is run by our backup generator. We only lose power about once a year, but it's another good idea, if applicable for your area

having spare pump at all time is a good thing in this hobby.
one should be available when the one running bugged down,
just use the existing media and you will be fine.

in my case i had 3 x 2200 powerhead running through this for my
72x30x24 tank. if any one of the 3 bugged down, there is a replacement
immediately
