Wet Dry Trickle Filter and Ceramic Ring VS Bio balls

-anyone can comment on the wet dry trickle filters?
-normal wet dry trickle filters used the Bio Balls what if I use the ceramic ring in
it?
-normal sump with ceramic or bio ball soak in are better then wet dry trickle filter?
-how about the moving bed filtration?
-how about a skimmer? why is it most used in salt-water but not and fresh water?(not
talking about surface skimmer)

been looking for information a lots on youtube, LAFISHGUYS had got lots of information and that's where I understand the wet dry trickle filter
also live rocks and live sand. and some jellyfish information

I dont know about wet/dry filters but i know OFL had one so he should be able to help

Protein skimmers are only needed in salt water, the reason i think is that waste (urine etc) sits on the top of salt water tanks whereas it is suspended in the water in freshwater. Im not 100% on this

You only get live rock in saltwater tanks too
I can't get no sleep

Thanks a lots, I'm more interested in the wet dry trickle filter
and the difference of bio ball and ceramic rings, about the skimmer it's for my interest of how it's done, and if it helps in fresh water. all I want is everything in my strength for the good health of the fish most probably Oscar, cos Gourami are hardy the can even survive without introducing oxygen in water cos they can actually breath out of air easily

bio balls and ceramic rings basically serves same purpose... to be a host of
beneficial bacteria. ceramic rings give a wider lateral surface while bioballs
have porous surface and more crevice. that is the reason why these media are
very seldom to wash... to keep good bacteria intact.

but creative mind of hobbyist did not stop in experimenting. though there
is no scientific proof yet.. some people find this one to be an alternative
with those expensive ceramic rings and bioballs

I run my canister outlet into my tank's integrated trickle and it works great - extra media for more bio and obviously aerates more not to mention I'm turning my water over twice as much as I would if just running my canister. Works great.

I have a 10inch tiger in a 55 gal so I need all the filtration I can get my hands on.

Secondly, I agree totally w/ Paul = ceramics, tubes, balls - it's all good; just a home for bacteria as I see it.

i am using scrap pvc pipe cut into sizes...

One of the chambers in my sump filter performs as a wet dry trickle filter, but only partially, probably the top 4 inches. A proper wet dry filter is a little bit more sophisticated.

Skimmers, not necessary in a freshwater environment.

It really doesn't matter what type of media is used in a wet dry trickle filter. The bacteria that live on your media require oxygen. Normally the media is submerged under water and oxygen is created by water flowing through the media. However if that media is not submerged under water but open to the air, it is exposed to much more oxygen thus making the bacteria that much more efficient. Obviously that media still has to be wet so the water flows through the media, i.e. a trickle filter.

That are commercially available wet dry trickle filters, Eheim manufacture them. However I wouldn't recommend these for Oscars because they require that much more maintenance. Because Oscars create a lot of waste, as soon as the media becomes dirty, the water doesn't trickle through the media fast enough and the whole system slows up. Marine fish don't create as much wasted these filters are much better on saltwater environments.

Just my two cents

in one of my DIY jug canister, i employ wet / dry principle. once all media
becomes submerge in water, it is time for me to do the cleaning. same is true
with the sump... once the flow of water becomes restricted, it time to wash the
media.

thanks a lots for all the information. looking forward for a DIY wet dry trickle filter sump, I learned something here about keeping a good filter, which is keeping a Bio filter that does not need to be clean is the best. so the most important thing to have is working on better mechanical filtration before entering the Bio filtration, and create a Wider Sump would help for letting more bacteria growth and keeping the water flow normal, then the Bio filtration will never need to be clean!@!!
so I won't lose any of the beneficial Bacteria. Right?!

-will the beneficial bacteria free swimming in the water?
-or they only will be when the tank is cycling?
-would UV sterilizer kill my beneficial Bacteria?
-should a UV sterilizer installed before water entering the sump or before they enter the fish tank?

I have already set up a tank for testing, with feeder shrimp and feeder fish.
used a pump, pump to a small box contain all the mechanical filter media, and flow down to a flower pot (ceramic), lots of chip stone which is normally use for construction, with 3 1.5inch hole at the bottom of the pot dripping into the feeder tank. and yes I used a drip plate before the water enter the pot.

my very own wet dry filtration testing,
Thank you for all the great advise!!!
