if your plans are to house 6-8 oscars until they reach maturity then im afraid you will need a rather large tank. and by large i mean something in the 300-400 gallon range. along with that you will need filtration to go along with it.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

my goal is simple a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all

how about just keep one? that would require 55 gallon (US) minimum- bigger is always better:) you'll find lots of useful info on this site on how to best care for your little finned friend

planning the tank is part of the fun

6-8 oscar is monsterfishkeeping and will indeed need a very big tank.
If yo are ready for the big league, i say go for it!
But please consider that keeping a monstertank running will be costfull and will need a big dedication.
I was planning for a 600Gl but after doing the research i decided it was too much for me..

6 to 8 oscars will require huge tank with matching filtration.
a 2 x 4 x 1 tank will do (in meter). with that size and good
filtration, you will have buffer for water change...

That's why research is essential.
Glad you reconsider!

I, too did the mistake of buying oscars prior to reasearch. I bought two oscars and housed them in a 10 gal tank. I upgraded to 50 gal tank (because that's all I could afford at that time) and get them to grow up to 6 inches. But they started fighting and long story short, I end up rehoming one and he is now alone but happy in my 50gal tank. He is now 7".
When I'm good, I'm very good.. When I'm bad, I'm f*ckin' better.
