Hey, new here, ran across the site while doing some oscar research. Anyway I just recently got a 55 Gal tank set up for my Albino Oscar. The tank came with this filter www.amazon.com/AquaClear-70-Aquarium-Power-Filter/dp/B000260FUW That being said, how should I set the filter up? I read that carbon can cause HITH, so I was wondering if I should just do the sponge material and then like two bags of BioMax on top rather then carbon. Thanks for any input.

Welcome to our community, I hope we can be of some assistance.

Okay, the filter in question is really manufactured for small community tanks. That said, it would be enough for your tank but it would struggle with a fully grown oscar. Because oscars are so incredibly messy and it really is a good idea to over filterate your aquarium.

Okay, now to your question. I wouldn't bother with carbon, it really isn't necessary. Whether or not it causes hole in the head disease is very debatable. You'd be much better off utilising the space for biological media.

Whatever you do you're going to find this type of filter needs cleaning on a regular basis once your Oscar reaches adulthood

I agree with Penn.. The filter is good, but no where near big enough. You will need filtration for about a 200 gallon tank to cope with the Oscars bio load.

Yes I would do a filter pad, and Biomax in the filter rather than carbon...

hello...i agree with ofl and nicki. Aquaclear makes the best hang on back(HOB) filters in my opinion. I find that the aquaclear 110 (which does 500 gph) is a good filter for a 55 gallon thet is maximum stocked. BTW welcome to the site
I have no idea why the water bill is so high
