To be perfectly honest I don't think it's a good idea to have a bare bottom tank. Fish do like substrates in a tank, it would not be natural for them not to have some kind of substrate. And we all know how much oscars love excavating gravel and sand.

Oscars have been known to choke on gravel. It sure is much easier for me now, with a bare bottom, to keep nitrates under control.

I think gravel substrate is a vestigial remnant of UGFs.

I've thought about trying sand and have read pool filter sand works very well. But I'll just stick with my bare bottom (I painted the underneath a copper color and the oscar quit trying to swim downward).

Hey Pauli, I think it looks pretty good with the bare bottom. Nice looking fish too. Is that 2 Oscars and a Texas?

i went bb too! i love it! so easy to clean and it does make the fish stand out...i'm sure there is now less stress on the stand and even on the entire tank structure....my O's are loving it, they swim everywhere now...i put a power head at the bottom so it can push all the poop to the filter inlets...looks kleen glad i did it

in the old picture its two oscar and a GT
in the new BB pictures it two sevrums
and one oscar
had to rehome the other oscar cause it was being beat to death by bigger oscar
then picked up two sevrums and a fire eel
thats the whole reason for going BB
but i do like the bare bottom light reflects of glass and gives fish a more colorfull look
and clean up is a breeze
im enjoying so far no complaints
