most members dont use carbon in there filters. oscars and a lot of other fresh water fish can do without its use so in fact your just wasting your money putting something into your filter that just isn't needed. even after using meds you can use water changes to remove the meds so again carbon can be done without. I personally would fill the space with more media or sponge/filter floss or your other preferred filter media.

as for does it change PH. I don't believe it makes any change to PH, but I stand to be corrected? does it absorb your water conditioner? it would depend what chemicals are in the water conditioner. most water conditioners work very quickly so have done there job before the carbon would absorb them.

i agree with marcus on the need for carbon in an oscar tank. i also do not use it regularly but i do keep some on hand to help in removing meds from a tank. but those uses are few and far between......
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Am I reading this right? Carbon isn't necessary in an Oscar tank? All you need in your filter are the foam pads and ceramic media? Mine are running with the media that came with them (carbon and ceramic rings). I was actually going to ask what the best way was to change these over 4-6 months down the road. I am currently running dual Jebo 835 Canister Filters. I had already planned on alternating filter cleanings 3 months apart. That way, 1 filter is always running and don't lose bacteria. As always, thanks for the great advice.

I just had this come up for a canister filter that I am running, I did away
with my carbon and added more rings, and buffing pads. have seen no adverse affects.
my chemistry is a little better even 2 days later.
