TOPIC: Cloudy Tank Water

Cloudy Tank Water 2 years ago #97187

]I have 2 oscars in a well-sized tank. One is a 6 inch oscar that was just moved to this tank after being picked on by needle fish, rad scats, and green-spotted puffers. I moved him into a newly set up tank and then bought a baby 1 inch max. oscar. The big oscar is afraid of the little oscar so that is not my problem. My problem is since 3 hours after they were both in there, the water became cloudy. I put in 7 large pellets and 4 bloodworm cubes before so that may be the cause of the cloudy water but if so, any ideas on how to fix this. If you think it is another problem other that overfeeding, please tell me.

Was the new tank fully cycled before you put the fish in?

I learned the hard way, DO NOT CYCLE WITH AN OSCAR. Your water is probably cloudy because the bacteria is just getting started or something like that. Everytime I cycle a tank, the water is cloudy for the first day or so.

Anyway, you should probably try to put your O's back in the other tank and get some Danios to cycle with. Wait the 5-6 weeks for the tank to cycle and then put the O's back in that tank.

You will probably find that more people don't even realise they need to cycle a fish tank before it is completely safe environment for your fish. So in the first few weeks they have fish they are constantly going back to the fish store to replace the ones that keep dying and they can't understand why. Most people probably cycle their fish tanks without even realising it, they are going about it completely in the wrong way but nevertheless, it finally gets cycled, but with quite a few fish deaths. However, to cycle a fish tank properly, you've got to take it slowly and make sure that the ammonia doesn't get too high, that is when the fish start playing. So for the first few weeks he would need to carry out water changes.

You say that you put your oscar in the tank after two days? Did you carry out water changes once a week? I suspect that you were lucky, your Oscar was probably exposed to fairly high ammonia but managed to get through the cycling process without succumbing to the toxins. Let's just hope that this experience doesn't catch up with it later on.

We wouldn't normally recommend you use an Oscar for cycling and aquarium, you're much better off using a group of community fish such as tetra, or maybe Guppy

if i may add to what OFL had explain, most hobbyist clean the tank totally
every time they lost fish/fishes, thus, losing whatever good bacteria that
had been establish. instead of having a good start up, the are back to
zero again.

You need to put the O's into the other tank PRONTO so they don't die from "new tank syndrome". Then, go buy some cheap tropical community fish (I use danios because they are the cheapest,) and put them in the new tank to cycle it. Leave the tank alone for the next 5-6 weeks and let the bacteria build up and do their thing. Once that's done, put your O's back in and they can have a danio snack. It's really simple.
