They all have their pros and cons.

Sand looks nice, but tends to be a pain to clean. Small amounts of sand will get sucked up into the gravel-vac for that reason it is my least favorite substrate (from my experience anyway) and I don't feel that it gets cleaned properly.

Crushed coral looks nice and is easy to clean, but raises your ph A LOT! It is not uncommon for crushed coral to raise ph to 9 or higher. You can always offset this by using driftwood, but this is a tedious business.

Common gravel can look nice and be easy to clean if you get the right stuff. It also does not affect your ph. For these reasons it is my favorite substrate.

They can all work it's just a matter of preference

i find white sand tends to wash out the fishes colour a bit so i use either natural or black sand in my tanks.......
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

I used gravel for 10 years, then tried sand a month ago.... Don't see myself using gravel again for a long time. I say Sand, it gives your tank a more natural look in my opinion and it seems the fish feel more comfortable with it. I use pool filter sand from my local dealer; $12.75/50 pound bag. Not white, more of a tan color with some black specs. check my newer videos if your curious.

I think as pointed out already there are good and bad in both. i would choose what you like the look of. and select a colour to match the fish you have. sand and pale fish makes the fish hardly noticeable. red and orange fish stand out well on dark background, but if you have dark fish sand would go better or you not notice them. the finer the sand/gravel means poo will sit on top making cleaning easy, but you may end up sucking a little up with each clean. large gravel is a pain to clean as bits sit under it.

I dont really have a problem with losing sand while cleaning it as I use a syphon thing that looks a little bit like a penis enlarger LOL ...and in any case any sand that does get sucked up sits at the bottom of the bucket ready to be added back to the tank when I have finished doing my water change. This system works really well

I have 6mm golden gravel and it is nice. I did think of getting the silica sand (pure white) which is used in mono blocking for drives etc etc As Necro said they can wash out the colors of ur fish and looks like coral sand if u like that kinda thing...
But I have bought 50kg's of the gravel and will stick to it now....
