so last night at 1am my 135 gallon tank decided that it wanted to commit suicuide and i herd a loud pop and after that a moment of silence and rushing of water after

i got up out of bed to see that 20 to 40 gallons drained out the tank with fish in tank ( oscar -2 sevrums-fire eel-pleco) looking like WTF!!!!

i began draining the rest of water as fast as i could out the window!!! thinking the the crack in the tank was going to bust open and everyone was going to come flying free onto the floor.

DONt want that so i wanted to relieve the pressure as fast as i could.

long story short

drainded tank

house flooded with about 50 gallons

all fish moved into tub

moved

heater

fx5

bubbler

in there with them

went well

rentured tank today because was under 5 year warenty! should get a replacment by wednesday!!

for now everyone was placed in a 60 gallon tank

with FX5 and AC110 in there

which looks funny WAY OVER FILTERED!!!

.

.

MY QUESTION VERY IMPORTANT

how does a tank go about busting like that out of no were

i no it happenes but just never thought it would happen to me you no!

lady at store said somthing about if tank cracked from middle of tank down it ment something and if it cracked from almost middle but more on side down it ment something eles?

dont no if this makes sence to any of you but ya????

the tank was level as i could get it

the stand was a DIY

was just a hair off but nothing extreme

water was leaning more on front side of tank by just a hair you could not even tell untill you filled up all the way to the top and you could see it hit the cross member from the front first then slowly as you filled it would reach the back.

sence water was leaning more on front panel you would think that would crack no? but the back panel is what crack???

any ideas

any thoughts would help!!!!

when i say it was leaning more tords front by just a hair i really mean just a hair

it wasnt extreme at all??

Wow man that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. I have no idea why it would have happened, but it scares me because I have an old 125 in my room

I guess there's quite a few variables that can cause a crack or a leak.
Earthquakes being one of them.
You ruled out some other options and i guess the woman in the store meant that a stress fracture usually occurs diagonally.
Lucky you still had a warranty...

My 90 Gl quit on me just this week, so i can relate to how beat you must be.
You just cannot stop working in case of an emergency.

Don't give up, i know it sucks, but equipment is equipment.
Equipment can fail, fish can die, but the love for the hobby should continue.

Iv never had a tank just bust open.... but then again iv never had a tank over the size of 90 gallons so I cant really comment

what I have done is drop a tank ornament into the tank when I picked it up cus it had algae on it and it cracked the bottom of the tank....was gutted

I'm so sorry! Think of the bright side - at least you were home, only 50 gallons escaped, and your fish lived. Just think how much worse it could have been.

all the horror stories I've read have involved glass tanks - has anyone ever heard of acrylic failing?

Sorry to hear about the tank Pauli. That does suck.
But good job getting the fish set up in the 60 and taking advantage of the warranty. Hopefully the flooring was too damaged.

As far as why the tank cracked, I have no idea. My best guess it has something to do with the stand (leveling, wood settleing, etc), making a certain pressure point to much for the glass.

Good Luck getting the new 135 set up gracefully.

ya true could be stand
but only off by slightest of margens nothing extreme
and there was more pressure on front of glass not back panel glass
so i think im going to by some 3/4 styrofoam board and stick that between the new tank and stand maybe to help even things out if anything but i really dont think stand did it
i put a level on the tank leghth of tank from side to side and bubble was perfect in middle
put level on tank front to back meaning depth and bubble on level was still in the middle but not exactly just off by a couple hairs from being in middle
but maybe thats all it took for the tank to bust
but like ive said before would of thought front pannel woulf of busted first sence pressure was on the front more

I must say all my tanks tend to lean into the room after some years.
I never correct it, but got styrofoam slabs under the tank indeed.
