I am intending on moving OFL on to a different server soon. However, choose to the amount of Photographs that have been uploaded into the members galleries, we are over 1 GB in size. That probably will not mean a lot to those of you who aren't really into computers, but believe me that is a lot of space. So making a backup of all the files, downloading them, and then putting them onto the new server would take ages. However, removing all the photographs will reduce the size considerably.

There is not really an easy way to do it. Once we are often running again, members will be invited to re-create that galleries.

nothing will change on the main website, there maybe a little down time while the Name Servers change but it isn't normally more than a couple of hours, normally less. The problem is, it's all very well giving everyone their own gallery, but it takes up so much space on the server. So when it comes to maintenance and downloading, it causes huge problems.

Personally, I don't bother looking at the galleries, no disrespect to our members, but if I'm on the website, it's nearly always on here

What I was thinking of doing is doing away with the members gallery altogether, and just setting up a gallery where maybe we could get all of you to submit your best photos. Then maybe we could have 50 really good photographs in the gallery. We could also have another section where each month, we put a few of the contest pics in there as well. This way, all the photos will be good, because let's be honest, a lot of the photographs in the members gallery aren't that good.

my own point of view is that galleries meant to share what you have.
and i am sure, each individual had their own file copy. after viewing,
only few will come back and view it again, thus, it will not matter
if you remove them for the mean time, and people could re-introduce
them later. as long as the forum runs smoothly, that wouldn't be problem.

The problem with giving people the freedom to upload their own photos is in many cases, they do not compress them. The software compresses the original photo so that it opens at a reasonable speed. However, the original photo which could be 2 MB in size is stored on my server, thus taking up lots of space which I am paying for. I have just removed several hundred photos. Originally, the whole website was just over a 1 GB size, it is now something like 270 MB, is a huge difference, and it was mostly due to all the photos that were stored on the server..

I think we will let people add their photographs on the forum using photo bucket and keep the gallery for some really nice photos.

Anyway, I really must sleep, I have just got a griping pain in my guts which is keeping me awake. Hopefully my hospital appointment will be coming up shortly.

I hope you feel better soon Penn. I'm probably guilty of not compressing, we post so much in our threads that might be enough and save the gallery for the contest winners. I don't know anything about running a site but I'm guessing the bigger the MB the more it costs.
