well guys i no its a stupid question as im not new to fish keeping but im no rocket scientist ether when it come to fish keeping
but here it goes im in the prosess of looking for a male jag
to go in to my tank
i have one solo oscar in my 135 tank
with 2 fx5 and a ac110
the tank looks so big and the oscar looks well small in the tank and i want something to fill it up
the oscar grew to be about 10 inchs
im getting the jag and hope to keep the the oscar in the tank with him and hope things work out but most likly not. ive seen it done before but the tank was much larger ill addmit. i no the jag doesnt go out looking for fights but rather is very territorial so any fish that swims pasts its rock is gunna hurt lol
couple questions
how long will it take the jag to reach at least 13inchs?
do any of you no how long it take for the jag to become aggressive towards other fish?

i know you are worried that someday your jag might hurt the O. but my O almost killed my male jag which was around 6 inches at that time. just make sure your jag has hiding places as he will enter your Os territory.
my jag is around 8 inches now, when i got him 3-4 months ago he was like 4-5 inches.

Jags can be very aggressive when they mature. It really depends on how aggressiv ethe jag and your oscar is. Obviously if your jag is a real bully and your oscar is soft, your oscar will be in trouble. But wait for cris (necromancer) to chime in, he is the jag expert!!

jags and oscars can be kept together without too much incident until the jags starts to mature. i found, in my experiences with any parachromis species, that while young they can be a little on the "pussy" side, if you know what i mean.
however when the get to about the 7-10 inch mark their true colours tend to really start to shine through. by nature they are an aggressive species that can be relentless in their bullying. add to that the pseudo canines they possess and you will have fish that can dispatch a tankmate with ease if it so chooses.

now there is always the different personalities that cichlids have and you might get one that is calm and mellow for its entire life or you might get one that will not tolerate any mates at all.

personally i wouldnt risk my oscars in the same tank as a mature jag just in case the jag "snaps" and decides he would rather be the only resident of your aquarium.......

just my 2 cents..................

i really thank you guys for your insite!!!
im gunna keeping looking for the jag
and hopfully get one when i see the right one
i no in the end ill end up getting rid of the oscar cause of aggression issues with the jag but ill try to keep them both as long as possable and hey never no may work out haha
but i just need a bigger fish to fill out the tank better
i would get tank mates for the oscar that are better for him but im just want that moster fish you no something thats gunna break the 12inch mark at least

given what cris has said you may not have a chance to get rid of the oscar once the jag gets aggressive!!! I dont think its a wise move. Why not rehome the oscar and get the jag at the same time!!!!

i could throw the oscar in a spare tank i have its my girls Bow Front but thats only 50 gallons
i dont think the oscars gunna like it going from a big tank to a small
but ill take that advice and maybe try and find a new home for him before getting the jag!
you guys have any ideas on what can go into the 135 with the jag as a tank mate?
if nothing that is fine just curious

i have what you may consider a community tank with jags in it. it also houses a texas cichild (Herichthys cyanoguttatus), a jack dempsey, and a red tiger mota ((parachromis motaguensis). so far the situation is tense at times but overall no major problems to speak of.
and if your wondering the male jag rules the tank.....
