Welcome to the site... and thanks for posing the question about tank mates BEFORE you purchase them. So many people don't and then we are repeatedly telling them to get rid of some fish because they are overstocked or having water problems.

The issue is that you want an Oscar. They start small but get big! I bought mine in November at 4" and he is now 11" and still not fully grown. He is in 120 gallon tank with a Jack Dempsey and I barely have enough room. A 75 gallon will be just enough to comfortably have your Oscar and 1 or 2 SMALL fish (this is Brooksie agreeing with Delboy!)
Lastly, if you haven't figured this out yet, fish stores do not know what they are talking about. You are doing the right thing by coming here for advice. Remember to fully cycle the tank before you put any fish in it.
