TOPIC: Tankmates compatibility test

Tankmates compatibility test 1 year, 9 months ago #109401

People who wants to keep large fishes(over 10 inches) with their oscars. Watch out because some tankmates are incompatible. Some can eat the oscar, vice versa. Some can bully the oscar vice versa. some doesn't adapt with the oscars habits.
This are some of those fishes:
1. African tigerfish- This fish can grow 3 ft. long and longer. It's an aggressive fish that makes it incompatible.
2. Eel- Eels are known to escape tanks and also they can scare the oscar by doing it escape at night when the oscar is resting.
3. Gars-Gars like Alligator gar can eat oscars and also some smaller gars can't react well with the snatching behavior of the oscar.
4. Sunfish-Some sunfish are aggressive to the oscar.
5. Pimelodids-Red-tailed catfish can grow so big that it can eat an astronotus ocellatus.
6. Piranhas- Oscars can get eaten or fin nipped by red-bellied piranhas and others.
7.snakeheads-They are illegal in USA and also the giant snakehead can eat an oscar. they're also aggressive.
8. Wolf fish- it is aggressive.
9. Wyckii catfish- It is aggressive also.
10. Large Cichlids-Rift Lake Valley cichlids like Frontosa have a different pH and some cichlids are aggressive.
11.Small fishes-Of course the oscars are going to eat it. Small fishes includes those that can be fitted to the oscars' mouth.

i did, but as a footnote,
Smaller gars can go together with o's very well, but it may result in the need to handfeed the gar every time, because the oscars will grab all the food, if they get the chance.
I recently started to gently push my tiger away, when i want my gar to feed.

On sunfish, mine became aggressive towards all other fish in the tank, but never bothered my oscar. But different fish, diferrent behaviour.

DAMN, Good thing I happened on this thread. Now I'm gonna have to figure out what the hell to do with the giant snakehead in my garage, I was planning on adding him to the community tank tomorrow after work. I guess i could just take him to the metroparks nearby and drop him in the river or something. I'm sure he'll be fine since its right on the great lakes.

after reading this i decided to put mine in my son's outdoor swimmingpool, just to be sure it wouldn't eat my other fish.
But in the morning it was gone, and i'm glad the fish was so smart to find his way into the wild, where he belongs.
Different country, but i'm sure the snakehead won't mind...

With all this talk about Oscars not getting along with other large fish. I have decided to get rid of my Oscars tank mate. This is a picture of me that my wife took just before I through it back into the lake I caught it in. Notice how sad I look....

GENERAL COMMUNITY TANK 'BEST PRACTICES'/VISUAL REFERENCE:

THE MORE YOU KNOW!:

Usually, with very few exceptions (perhaps the nurse shark) most fish that have teeth that look like they mean business...mean business.

I think you are being overtly picky, even taking the micky out of the OP. Ok so it was something he decided to post without being asked but whats wrong with him giving some advice. You never know, someone may google about some of these fish to see if they are compatiable and get the answer they need.
I can't get no sleep
