My guess would be that it is just an Oscar doing what Oscars do and the SD was not quick enough...If it was small enough to get crunched then it was always in danger..Oscars are just buggers, but we love them, I am sure there was no malicious intent! How big is your tank?

Thats why then hyper...sounds like aggression over space/territory to me.
You have to be trusted. By the people that you lie to. So that when they turn their back on you. You get the chance to stick the knife in

I agree, that combined with the SD not having enough space to zoom, hide and break the Oscars fix on it.

If all of our Oscars just floated around, minding their own business, being friendly and sharing pellets with their tank mates... then they just wouldn't be as much fun.

Sounds like one of those things that happens when keeping oscars. I am guessing that the oscar saw the SD as a possible meal

How small exactly is small?

My sd's were in the tank as babies just some weeks before i introduced my baby oscar , and when the SD's got spooked in the first year i had them, they'd allways school up with my oscar, as if they were hiding with their big brother for protection.
Our fish don't grow too big, our tank becomes too small!
