TOPIC: Green Terror + Oscars?

Green Terror + Oscars? 1 year, 8 months ago #115553

As ive said in a couple other posts, ive got a new 125 gallon thats cycling now. I was thinking about adding a small green terror to it, along with one, possibly two, oscars. The oscars are bout 8-9 inches, and the green terror is about 2.5 inches. The green terrors a male, and im not positive on the sex of the oscars. Ive been debating on putting the two oscars together, cuz one is a little more agressive than the other. But im going to try screening off the 2, and see how it works out like that. Id like a little more color to the tank, which is why i was thinking about adding my small green terror to the tank.

Ive looked around a lot online, and all i get is random people saying that its not a good idea at all, but have never tried it. Their both south american cichlids, so i hope theyll be ok together. Any info on my situation would be greatly appreciated!

I have seen it work, and I have seen it fail... They aren't called "Green Terrors" for nothing..

A lot of it will depend on the attitude and aggression level of your GT... All you can do is try it, and have a back up plan if it fails.

Well so far the GT has been real mild tempered. But hes also still small. He gets along with the other assorted cichlids in the tank with him. And like you said, i do have a back up plan if it turns sour. Im just hoping that with the oscars being about 4x his size, he'll get put in his place if he tries anything.

from my experience with both of those fish.... i think your probability of it working out is much higher with a younger smaller GT. The GT should learn to give the Oscar its space.

I have a 3" GT in my Oscar tank; including a 9" Red Oscar. The GT knows its place and has been very docile.

Good Luck with your mix. and like nicki said, its all about the back up options.

Dont do it. A small GT will be fine with an Oscar but as the GT gets bigger it will get agressive. It will eventually batter your oscar and you will have to rehome one of the fish. GT's are really really aggressive when mature and are best kept in a species tank

I appreciate all the help on this situation! Ive decided to keep the GT seperate from either of my oscars. I like my oscars waaaayyy too much to even take the chance of either of them getting beat up. GTs truly are beautiful fish...but to me, they dont have the "personality" of an oscar.

On another note, would a 55 gallon be sufficient for an alone GT? Or would i be better off with a 75gallon?

Thanks for your time, and info!

A 55g will be ok for a single GT, but a 75 would be better. Bigger is always better!!!

A 55 gallon would be fine for a GT. With the right maintenance and water quality your GT will flurish. It will probably develop quite a bit of personality towards you and other humans, being in a solo tank.
