TOPIC: Alligator Gar with Oscars?

Alligator Gar with Oscars? 4 years ago #13063

Hello all. Was just wondering if anyone had some input on throwing a baby alligator gar in with my baby oscars. I figured since they have same temperment and everything I might be able to get away with it.

I also heard another one i could drop in is a Grass Pickerel. Heard those might do the same.

Any input would be appreciated!!!

I would avoid adding fish to an aquarium that are going to grow very big as adults. I am by no means an expert on alligator gar but they can get very big. You probably find yourself having to get rid of it in a few months time when it gets too big so what is the point of getting one? I think you'll also find them too much of a predator and they were probably either eat, or cause serious harm to any other fish in the tank

as ofl said an alligator gar gets big very big between 8-10 feet and weighs in at over 100 lbs. as for the grass pickerel they, i beleive are classified as a cold water species that prefer water in the 60-75 degree range. although they might be able to co-habitate with oscars i dont think it would really be a good match.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

wow. i didnt know alligator gars get that big. i believe there are some other sorts of gars that do not get so big, some research should do the trick. i've seen gars and oscars living together well, (not sure on the type) but if the gar outgrows the o it'll have a problem. if you can find one that gets about the same size as a o, you should have no problems.

Alligator gars like everyone has said get way to large to be kept in a home aquarium. If you really want a gar, look into getting needle nose gars, they tend to stay small enough to keep.

I am not to familiar with grass pickerel, but if you are looking for a different type of tankmate for you Oscar, look into getting a bluegill. I keep bluegill with my Oscars and they do very well together.
A fish is truely great when it isn\'t satisifed with the tank as its territory, and jumps out to claim your living room.
