Hi - 34 year old mom of 3 and am the proud owner of 2 baby oscars 1,5 inch in length. My tank is 2 metres long and already consists of sunset guaramis, 2 pairs of breeding convicts and 2 angel fish. I do also have 3 blood parrots! According to our one and only reputable fish shop, if you introduce oscars to a tank when they are young, they won't attack or eat the other fish when they turn out to be the size of a whale compared to a dolphin! Is this correct or do I need to start looking at a 2nd tank for my other fish? These oscars have settled in so quickly and were immediately happy mingling amongst my convicts and guaramis - no problems at all and they are probably the same size as my relatively young female convicts!
34 year old Mom of 3 kids and keen fish lover since I was a teenager. My aquarium is about 2 metres long and I\'m responsible for it\'s upkeep! I have just bought 2 baby oscars and I\'m here to learn more about them and to ensure that mine are happy!

welcome to Oscarfishlover

I personally would never try and second-guess an Oscar, they can be very unpredictable so if you value a smaller fish, don't put it in with an Oscar. An Oscar will look on a small fish as food. They may not eat it straight away, it may live in the tank for a long time, however, there is always that risk that the Oscar well eat it. I have myself introduced very small fish in with my Oscars and they have not eaten them, however I wouldn't tell someone else to do the same as me.

Thanks very much for your advice - I cannot buy any books here or magazines on this type of fish so am relying on this web page and of course, someone like yourself with advice!
I shall indeed start making plans for a 2nd tank, obviously not as big or I'll spend my life cleaning them! I'm sure I've got a little bit of time (I hope!) but will watch carefully at their size and move my other fish out before they become lunch! I love my blood parrots so will heed your advice! Cheers!

A good rule with oscars is that if they can fit it in their mouths they will try to eat it! Sometimes if brought up with other fish they might not eat it, however is it worth the risk

Im not sure on how big the gouramis get so cant say on them but i dont think they get big so be careful with those. The angels will get big enough not to get eaten but given that can be a bit delicate they might get injured by a large oscar moving around fast

Your parrots and convicts will get big enough not to get eaten so they should be ok.

The thing we cant say about is aggression. Oscar generally are not that aggressive so your fish should be ok on that front but all fish are different and if you get an aggressive oscar they could get a beating

Good luck and have fun with your oscars
