Hey guys,
I've got one young oscar, he's getting close to 5 inches in size and at the moment he's by himself. I'd like to get a tankmate for him and was wandering what your thoughts are on a blue acara. I've bin reading a bit and it seems every fish is different and you never really know for sure whether they'll get along, but has anyone had any experience with oscars and acaras?
Just wanna see what you guys think before i get one. And if your wandering why a blue acara, i just think its an absolutely beautiful fish and, from what ive read, has some similar traits to oscars and should be able to hold its own.

I have got two blue acara and you are correct, they have great tank mates will Oscars as they can stick up for themselves. However, I am finding that one of mine is a little bit of a bully towards the jurupari, doesn't actually cause them any physical harm, just seems to want to show them who's boss. mind you, the jurupari will be bigger than the blue acara at some stage in their lives so we'll have to wait and see what happens then.

thanks for the response.
Thats great news cos they seem really cool.
I was also wandering if you could give me some advice on introducing a small/baby acara to my oscar. I've got some ideas and a spare tank just in case so i think i should be fine, but any tips would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Andrej.

You might as well just bite the bullet and put the blue acara in with the Oscar and see how things go. From what I know of blue acara, he may well Have a go at the Oscar since it's still quite small. Or the Oscar might have a got the blue acara, or they just might ignore each other. You won't know until you try

Blue acaras make great tankmates for oscars, they are generally not bullies but will not be bullied, and they dont get too big which is good if size is a priority, Just dont get a male and a female as they breed readily which can cause problem as they will get aggressive when breeding

I've got 2 oscars and a pair of breeding acaras (lots of babies at the mo)
Yes they do get pretty aggressive but the larger oscar will only allow that to a point - every now and then he'll chase them back to their corner.
It seems to work that he has the main part of the tank and they have a corner and as long as neither decides to wander everything is fine.
As far as Acaras go they can get very pretty when breeding - i have wild caught ones and even though these are not the prettiest they can still be stunning.
And if you can get a pair they breed like mad - i've had mine about 2 1/2 months and they are up to their third hatch.
