I have been keeping Convict Cichlids with Oscars for a few months now, with mixed results.

A breeding pair of Convicts is already settled in there. I added another pair yesterday since they reached 2+" size (The Oscars "vanished" a 1.5" Convict and threatened to have a snack with another young one the same day I place him in the tank, the female survived).

If Convicts grow up to 6" why aren't they listed as compatible tankmates with Oscars? I have no doubt they would eat young Convicts, but so far mine seem to tolerate -without showing interest in eating/harassing- the sub-adults and adults Convicts.

Most people dont put convicts down as tankmates for oscars because they can be so aggressive. From my experience one convict is fine as a tankmate for an oscars. A breeding pair of convicts can be a nightmare
I can't get no sleep

I just bought a convict today which is about one and a half inch in size, my biggest Oscar is around 7 to 8" and so far he has shown very little interest in it, do you think that it should be alright?

Even though I waited mine to be 2+ inches long, at 1.5 yours may be safe. Make sure you provide safe cover (decor-cave) and watch for the Oscar behavior. If your Convict is ignored, I would expect things to go well for you.

I have some large pieces of bog wood placed so that it makes like a cave area that the convict can get into, while I have been watching them the convict keeps swimming up to the biggest Oscar and every now and then he gives a little Chase but stops almost straight away so I am optimistic

Hopefully we succeed in our attempts.

No one's been harmed so far in my tank.

I guess as long as we provide enough space and good hiding places this combination is safe.

My four Convicts are paired-off, spawn, and raise their fry until they're eaten by others; then again they eat other's fry too (e.g. Oscars) so I guess it's a so far so good situation. And they eat food particles that come out of the Oscars gills so they help keeping the tank clean.
