my tank doesnt have tons of algae but a little on the decorations, i just put 2 mystery snails in my tank and im wondering if they will do ok. i use salt regularly and im wondering if it will hurt the snails. i use about 2 teaspoons per 5 gallons, 1/3 less than the recomended amount just to be on the safe side with Nelly. i would like to have a whole collony of snails in the tank, maybe some ivorys and blues. does anyone have expriance with these cool lil critters?

if your oscar or oscars are like mine snails wont last long my o's love them as soon as they see one its food.
but thats just mine.

i'll wait and see if she's picking on them before i get any more (if i do depending on other member posts ) and if she does i guess it will be a healthy little snack!

first, fresh water snails will not last long with salt.
2nd, it will end up as good meal for your oscar.
there was a similar posting here that get same result.

just want to make some clarification on salt: are you applying
salt as precaution, how did you go about it after water change?

mine dont eat the snails they just smash them open and pull them all around the tank:blink:

well she didnt kill them, she just picked on them and they wouldnt come out of their shells so i put them in with my goldfish. i use salt very sparingly and have never had problems keeping snails alive in it. in my experiance it helps ward off fungi and common problems such as ich, i hate using chemicals in my tanks, salt is completely natural.
