oscar tankmates what goes and what dosn't 3 years, 3 months ago #23692

hey guys i realise that there is a section on the subjest, which i have read, however i was hoping that you would be able to give me names of some fish that you have found get on wll with oscars as i love mine and dont want to harm him. i have a 6X2X2 foot tank with a sump and one oscar which is around 8-10 inches. if you could give me some sugestions that would be much appriciated i am also open to putting in more oscars so if you want you could suggest some setups with multiple oscars

cheers

a 175 gal tank is already a good size for 2 fully grown
oscar and some small non-aggressive species. what concern
me is that your oscar is already matured and might reject
new comer.

in order to accept new comer, chose an oscar of almost the
same size, or size that would not fit in your oscar's mouth,
re-arrange the tank before introducing to distort territorial
domain of the existing one. for varied tank mates, you can surf
on different post here so that you can have several option.

hope this helps.

hey i have looked at alot of the posts here and have gotten some great ideas.

at the moment my oscar is in a standard 4 foot tank and i will soon be moving him in to the 6 foot so it will be a new tank for everyone and there will be no territories hopefully this makes it easier.

i was also considering using my 4 foot as a grow out tank after the oscar iws moved out as i have some baby severums and blue acrars id love to move to his tank eventually

another thing i found amazing is that his is currently housed with 3 3 inch maximum convicts and he does not bother them at all and they have been with him for over 6 months.

any more ifo would be much apriciated

there are several basis for the tank mates to consider.
1) no hostilities among the bigger occupants.
2) school of colorful small species
3) swim as if dancing while floating.
4) wiggles their tail whenever they see the owner.

in my case, i love oscars, but i want non-sleeping fishes
so i got pangasius. i also love floating fish that's why
i have angel fish. however, when my oscars are spawning,
i was force to get another tank to separate them.

based on the posting of people who use to have several
tank mates is that "never" mix up afican cichlids with
american or amazon cichlids. i am not familiar with those
small cichlids that should be in group of 6 & more but there
is a posting here discussing such topic you want. i am familiar
with angel fish, pacu, and knife fish to go with the oscar. with
other kind, i don't. pacu goes very well with oscar on a 1:1 ratio
and it grows same rate with oscar.

you have the same size tank as me 6x2x2. to give you the best advice I would ask how much work do you want to do in looking after the fish. remember its for a long time and cant be missed if dont you feel well, or get bored or find other things you need to do. Large fish need large amounts of water changes.

if you are looking to stock the tank to a reasonable amount say(2 oscars + 3-5 smaller fish around 6inc)you will need to change around one 3rd of the water every 7-10 days. thats 50gallon. only by testing will you know for sure but thats a guess and will be near-ish.

if you try to add 4 oscars you will be changing 50g every 5+ days ish. if you add 2 oscars, 50g 10-16 days. so the main question is how much water do you want to change a wk. most people consider 50g from a 150g tank a reasonable amount. so I will advise you on this. 2 x oscars and 3-5 fish around 6inc
Be the change that you want to see in the world.

6x2x2 works out out be 150 imp gallons or 180 us gallons. in a tank that size you could easily house 2 oscars and another 4 8-10inch tankmates. as to what to keep as tankmates the list is a long one. i would suggest staying away form the more aggressive central american guapotes and looking at something that falls into the less agressive catagory.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!
