Now I don't think the Jack Dempsey will be able to eat the Oscar, however he might trying grab hold of it whilst it's still small. I imagine the Oscar will turn the tables on him when he gets a little bigger.

i have a very similer thing happening with my 2 small tiger oscars and 1 small albino oscar, all roughly the same size and around half and inch smaller than my gold severum, all being forced into constant hiding, am i literally waiting until they outgrow him or is it worth removing the severum form the tank all together until they have grow loarger than it?

i personaly put fish who bully in a time out bag......its a large net bag with open weave and a wire hoop in it to stop it flatening on the fish put the offender in the bag for a few hours floating in the tank when it bullies then he loses his territory .......then release him back into population and the behaviour changes drastically as the bully is now the new guy with no teritory!!!!! i have used this method for years and have only had to use it 3 times on one fish to cure the problem all the others behave after one visit to the time out bag !!!!!!!!!

yeah its amasing how it works but its simple you are letting the others take their teritory while they watch from the same tank !!!!!!!!they lose dominance and become the new guy ...let me know how you get on

going to the fish shop today to look for a sutiable net that will hopfully clip onto the side of my tank so i can use as it time out bag!
been watching the fish more closely today and it seems the severum is watching the oscars constantly waiting for them to move out of their corners and then attacking them so they go straight back in, is this definatly territorial behaviour os somthing else?

absolutly unbelieveable!!!!
after a ingth in the time out net (which i made....and was awful looking to say the least!) there is no aggression anymore in regards to the severum. the oscars are swimming freely and the tank now looks like it has more than one fish in it as non of them are hiding!!
thanks so much fro your advice!
honestly cant beleive how somthing so simple can have such outstanding results!
cheers again, all thoughts of giving the severum away have evaperated! which is good cos he is a lovely looking fish!!

no probs mate !!!!!!!!!!! i have cured very agressive fish with this method many many times...you may need a repeat visit for the offender in a few days but after that you can just dip the time out bag in the tank and the offenders behaviour changes instantly when he sees it!!!!!!!!!!! if behaviour persists just lenghten the sentence in the bag and keep repeating the treatment with longer time ,each time ,..........you will overcome the aggression EVERY TIME LOL....and you should see the state on some of my time out bags!!!!!!!! i could never make a pair of trousers !!!!!put it that way....
