TOPIC: Guppies, Mollys, Plattys

Guppies, Mollys, Plattys 3 years, 2 months ago #24807

I had a 65G tank set up with 2 guppies 2 plattys and a molly. I really wanted an Oscar so i went to Pet Smart and bought one. I finally get him in the tank (Knowing that he would probable eat all the fish, includeing the guppie babys that just poped out) and nothing happens... he swims around like a happy fish and no care in the world... i feed all the fish tropical flakes and he will swim around and eat the flakes off the bottem. It has been 4 days and not even one guppie baby is dead.

Anyone know why this is, and is my Oscar getting what he need from the tropical flakes?

it may because your O is small yet but i am fairly sure eventually your O will get larg enough and make an attempt to eat the smaller fish wich from what i have learned on this forum is not very nutritouse for the oscar... i am not sure what nutrition the oscar will get from the flakes i would suggest getting some high quality cichlid pellets for your oscar:)

Feed your baby Oscar around three times a day for around two or three minutes each session and he will get more than enough food.

I should stick to pellets if I was you, even babies will be equipped to deal with this type of food quite easily. You can introduce things like frozen shrimp or krill, that will help them grow

Not all Oscars eat smaller fish straight away. However I would never trust an Oscar with small community fish. The chances are he will look upon them as food at some stage, I be very surprised if he doesn't..

baby oscars are almost always hungry and eventually when the O see's you approach the tank it will beg for food...give your O enough food that there is none left over in a few minutes of feeding as uneatin food will eventually result in higher amonia levels... i feed my young O around 3 times a day

try to skip feeding for one day..... i am sure
the following day, some of smaller species will
be gone.

but i wont do that if i were you. do not make
your oscar become aggressive.

when i first got my oscar, and before I joined this forum, i would give him rosey red minnows occasionally. he was only 3 inches long, and had no problem eating 1.5 inch fish, and would even attempt the bigger ones, but couldnt swallow the entire thing. i just had to move the chinese algae eater out to the community tank because the oscar started showing a little too much interest in it...
Please, for my sake, change your oil!

ya .. you will definitely like a sober oscar.. make sure with everything said above you should take care of your tank water.. oscars are messy eaters.. as you might have read by now.. or practically seen
