Does anyone here have red terrors or bala sharks with their oscars? I didn't know red terrors existed till last night while wasting time online and now I'm in love. Would reds fight with my greens? And is there an antidote for fish fever??

They're huge !!, I'd need a lake to keep them in lol. I think the Reds would add just the right touch of color and make the others stand out more. If I got 2 Reds would my 180 US gallon tank be overstocked? 2 Oscars, 2 GT's, 2 Siver D's and 1 pleco.

I have never kept Red terrors myself but I know that they can be extremely aggressive hence the name. If I'd never kept them before I wouldn't risk putting one in with my Oscars, I think there could be trouble. One of my cichlid books talks about red terrors, I quote some of what is said
this is the type of fish that when it's defending its young, will leap out of the water at a hand that is placed over the surface of where the fry are located

Maybe just keeping one will cut out the aggression, but I wouldn't like to guarantee that.

It's very good to see you OFL and Iloved the pics of the beach you posted.
I have one of the Green Terrors in with them now and she can be pushy but no real harm done. Now that I think about it the Terrors would fight and keep everybody stressed. I love the fish though, the Reds are so beautiful. I guess I better double my efforts to find a job and get another big tank. Even one wouldn't be happy in a 40 US gallon would they?

of all the common fish names that are out there there are really only 2 that tell the tale of the fish one is the black nasty and the other is the red terror.
i have yet to own a red terror but from my reseach on the species they are excatly like their name suggests terrors. when you consider the size that they grow to plus the canines they possess and the attitude they have i would not recommend keeping them with oscars who are probalby the most peacefull of the larger cichlids.

bala sharks on the other hand are quite peaceful and make excellent mates for oscars. they grow to about 12 inches in lenght and can thrive in the same type of water as oscars.
Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

Bala sharks are so pretty, I read somewhere to keep them in groups of 3's, would that be too much for my tank?
I hate to give up hope of having some reds but if I do I'll have them in a tank by themselves. My Oscars are my babies and I won't let them get hurt.

Are you referring to Amphilophus festae or Cichlasoma uropthalmus????

I currently have two uros and find them to be rather "gentle giants" though do attack other fish on occasion:

Also, bala sharks are schooling fish and it is recommended you keep them in schools of at least 3.

Peace out
