LeafsFan created the topic: Stocking opinions please

My mother bought 2 jack dempseys ( I gave her my old tank) she don't know much about the whole fish thing and one of the jack dempseys I really like. Also the same one I like it's constantly putting a beating on the other one. The other one is kind of a typical pet store fish, very skinny and unhealthy he is too weak to actually defend himself properly.

I considered taking the stronger fish and putting it in my 100 gallon with my Oscar. Would a smaller jack Dempsey add a whole pile to my tanks bio load and take too much space away from my oscar and cause him to not reach his full potential. From the start I planned on having the 100 just for my Oscar but this is a really nice looking fish and I want to try to save the other one.

My tanks filtration is a filstar xl and it has an ac70 just for a little extra help.

How big is the JD you were thinking of putting with the oscar? If it's small the oscar might beat it up.

If the Jacks are 2 males, they wont play nice in any tank. JD can be a very tough customer. I wouldnt put one with your Oscar either. Oscar has already claimed the tank, wont likely stand for an intruder. Or, if JD is extra mean and tough(I have one like that) it could put your Oscar in peril. Not a big deal from a bioload situation, more of a territory issue. Remember, JD is a mid range aggressive Central American, and Oscars, despite their size are really kinda wimpy when push comes to shove.

It's close to 3 inches. That's another thing I was thinking about but I guess if I do I will just have to watch close and maybe step in if its not too late lol

Bad things often happen overnight, and when fish fight, it dont last long. Damage can occur in a blink. I dont think a 3in JD is gonna fare well with your Oscar. Could be fine too, ya never know.

Yeah it's so hard to judge. My Oscar is very docile too but I'm also thinking of how much my Oscar enjoys the 100 to himself and I don't want to ruin that.

If I were you, I would leave your Oscar to itself, get the most from it.
