I currently own a 100 gallon aquarium (5 foot) that houses one 6" Oscar. Tomorrow I'll be purchasing a 84x24x24 aquarium. My Oscar is fairly aggressive and I haven't been able to put any tank mates in the 100 gallon. I attempted to adopt a 6" jack dempsey and my Oscar chased it non stop for days until i eventually re homed the jack. ( I now know 100 gallons is way too small for two large cichlids. Would the 200 Gallon allow me to add tank mates? Or do you think the Oscar would claim the entire 200 gallon?

That size tank would allow for more options for sure, but you never know, it depends on the fish. Many will not tolerate other cichlids unless much smaller or you might be able to do non-cichlids without a problem.

I just do not want to buy a 200 gallon for one fish. I tried giant danios. Had 6 and now I am down to 3. I hoped they would make it, but didn't expect it.

You are correct though, definately depends on the fish. My friend has a 300 gallon with several jacks, and oscars and they do not bother eachother.

I would leave the Oscar in the 100 until you decide on, and locate suitable mates. Then everyone in the 200 at the same time. This way no one fish has first dibs on territory. Severum are great Oscar tankmates. I also have a large male JD with my Oscar and Sevs. He is a great community fella, very calm. I have another that is a holy terror, plays nice with nothing. Possibilities are many, but avoid the more aggressive Central Americans.

The difficult part is going to be locating larger grown tankmates. I think if I bought juveniles they would be a snack.

Most likely, yes. Oscar's fast growth rate makes selecting mates difficult. You almost need same size or bigger. Good sized Severum, Green Terrors or Acaras shouldn't be too hard to find.

Would it be possible to keep both tanks running at the same time ? May give you a little room to grow smaller specimens.
Adding the oscar last may help too.
I had a bumble bee oscar that I add to rehome to another mber because he didnt play well in a 150. Hope this works out for you
