TOPIC: Jewel cichlids

Jewel cichlids 2 years, 10 months ago #42976

Hi,

I think my tank is very nearly cycled maybe next week. I am definately getting 2 oscars and I was wondering about jewel cichlids as tank mates. They grow to about 4 to 5", so are a fair size. Silly question time. I know they come from a different continent to oscars but does this matter?

My tank is 1500cm x 60cm x 60cm holding approx 100uk gallons. I have got quite an efficient fitration system. I'am running 2 powerful external filters which the water filters through at 4 times an hour. I also have a nitrate removal unit installed. Does anybody have any ideas about this?

Thanks
Nigel

hello!! from the size of tank you are describing approx 100 uk gallons this would be just large enough for the two oscars you want im not positive but it would be my opinion that adding the jewels could cause problems unless you went with just one oscar and the jewels but again this is only my opinion

Hi,

Thanks for that,I think you are probably right. Sometimes the heart rules the head in these things. Probably best to stick with the original plan of 2 oscars
and see them happy.

Best wishes,

Nigel

i breed jewel cichlids ...and have done for many years .....your tanks a bit small as bentbarrel says ...but jewels are serious trouble in a community tank unless you keep only one sex ...males preferably ,i have a 9" oscar regularly pinned down by a 3"- 4" jewel .....when hes paired up with a female.....
