TOPIC: largemouth

largemouth 2 years, 10 months ago #43302

hello everyone.
my friend is going to get an oscar, but wants to know if he could house a same sized largemouth bass with it, and yes he will provide sufficient space.

I think that it would work. I would think that the oscar should be bigger. Bass can fit a pretty big fish in its mouth.

i don't know about that. might grow faster, but i think the largemouth would win the size contest eventually.
but don't know for sure, maybe largemouth bass wont grow as big in captivity,

a largemouth bass will easily outgrow an oscar. if you feel the need to house them together make sure the oscar is bigger than the bass and keep an eye on aggression. not from the o but from the bass. in their own rights bass are fairly vicious and might lay the smack down on the oscar.

largemouth can grow easily to 15+ pounds and i have yet to see an oscar that big.

I've watched it all my life till the past couple of years. The tragedy with Chris Benoit kinda broke my heart and I haven't been able to enjoy it since. He was my all time favorite wrestler.

he says that this is a a strain of large mouth that only grows half as big as normal. must be an Illinois strain, there two strains, northern and florida. the florida grows bigger. bass are not voraicious like oscars but are territorial. i wanted your take on it. and if you guys didnt't know this, goldfish contain enzyme called thiamense that causes predatory fish like oscars to have dietary problems. i have found that a better source of food is the minnow or small shiner works for large oscars, guppies for smaller. shiners can be purchased at any bait shop in the US. inn europe chubs work just as well

silly question, are largemouth bass available on the pet market? i'm guessing they aren't... but the idea of keeping a largemouth bass in an aquarium also appeals to me.
i would love to have a big tank with a few of the local fish in it... a largemouth, maybe some perch/sunfish etc. i was at the lakehouse a couple weeks ago and was trying to catch a small fish to bring home. i caught a couple of small white bass and a couple of 4" crappie. i tried one of the crappie in my tank, but he only lasted a couple of days (too stressed i guess, and i feel bad for even trying now). the white/ striped bass would have gotten way too big.
i was really trying to get some sunfish.. which used to be plentiful in our little cove, but now most of the aquatic vegetation (their cover) is gone due to more development in the area, im guessing.
