I'm wondering about keeping a snail (or two) in with our oscars. I've had great luck with snails before--minimum waste, they eat everything from extra fish food to algae, and are easy keepers--but I'm worried our oscars might consider a snail to be a tasty $5 snack. Anyone had any luck with snails and oscars? We have two tiger oscars. Thanks!

By the way: Great site! Very helpful and informative.

Depends what sort of snails you are talking about. Oscars are more than capable of eating small snails such as MTS's and small pond snails, but I very much doubt they would be able to eat a large apple snail for instance.

I like apple snails, but they've become illegal to sell here. Any other suggestions?

The only thing I know about snails is they taste good and they make a nice crunch when you tread on them. Check this website out, it might be of some help to you

I don't quite have the guts to try a snail

I guess this answers my question though: "Do NOT keep snails with loaches (sucking loaches are ok), pufferfish, crabs, crayfish or large aggressive fish as they will kill snails"

I can't see any problem with eating a snail. It's no different to eating a Cockle or a muscle, or even an oyster. Think I would draw the line at a slug though.

Yes, some snails are at great risk if you keep them with Loach. Unless of course you keep Malaysian trumpets, nothing can get into them. Can never understand why people actually introduce these horrible snails into their tank.

Ignorance, new tank keepers.

I don't know; snails seem a little to close to the slug for me (slimy). Also, they're kind of cute.

I think if I find a snail for a decent price, I'll buy it and see how it does with the oscars. Maybe keep it on the side with the smaller, less aggressive oscar.

You'll probably find that the slime makes them easier to swallow:lol:

I have eaten snails once in my life and from what I can remember, they were delicious. Had them with brown bread and garlic.

Does anybody know how long salt water snails are meant to live? I've had one in my marine tank for about 3 years, but therange thing is is that it has outlasted everything else in the tank. It even survived living with a triggerfish.
