Hy guys,
Just bought a new O' and some tankmates, I was going to get some silver dollars, but I saw some similar fish the guy called spotted myntis? almost identical to a dollar but they have spots along thier sides and a reddish tinge on the fins.
Does this sound like the correct name for the fish? and if someone has any, what do they prefer to eat, the fish guy said pleq pellets and steamed pumpkin and zucchini, does this sound correct?
I'll post pics soon, the fish are still in thier bags getting acclimated to the new tank before I put em' in.
thanks for any help.

Mettynis Hypsauchen is the scientific name for the Silver Dollars.
So I suppose they mean Spotted Mettynis.
Silver Dollars are extremely nice fish and will eat allmost anything.
They do e great job on cleaning all the leftovers out of my tank, including O-poo...
Great addition to a oscar tank.
Check the tankmates section on this site, loads of info on them.

do they look like this??

if so they are red hook pacu's "Redhook Metynnis" see here for more details

pfk mag

i have 2 of these "jekyll + hyde" they are 4" round (big!!) and unless you have a 400 ltr+ tank get ready for injuries they move like lightning when food is about (veg or meat based) they are relatives of pirhana's but you can put your hand in the tank!!

Please post some pics, for if they are actually Pacu ,you have enterded another level of fishkeeping.
Juvi Silver Dollars, Pacu and Pianha all look a lot alike.
They reach different sizes though...
Quite different that is....

info here on red hooks

very fast moving fish always have chunks out of snouts etc feeding time is a battle between these and oscars (oscar moves toward food and a flash of silver zooms by and food gone and 1 confused oscar)

BUT great fish to keep very peacefull (they only bother each other and thats no more than play)

I say Spotted Silver Dollar.
So all info in the tankmates section is right for this one as well.

i preach about pacu like they breathe fire and shoot lighting out of their eyes...
DONT BUY EM! (unless u got like say a 250 gallon tank with some THICK glass!)

my friend james.. had a 29 gallon tank.... and he said "i think imma get some fish... what do u reccomend?" and i said "dont get an oscar or any pacu for sure, they will outgrow that tank in 6 months or less"...

so of course he buys 2 pacu and 2 oscars... the pacu grew faster than the o's by a mile and now are in a 55 he just purchased and they are STILL crowded. its rather sad.

i swear places like walmart and petco and petsmart should have a warning label over pacu's, oscars, and plecos... WARNING WILL GROW HUGE.

you really gotta be dedicated to put up with a fish that can grow over 3 feet long and weigh 60 pounds... and im not that dedicated and my pockets arent deep enough for the tank it would take to support it.
