TOPIC: A bunch of questions.

A bunch of questions. 4 years, 7 months ago #5201

This is primarily questions asking what I can put with an Oscar in which size tank so I'll put it in this forum but I also have some filtration q's.

What could I put with an Oscar in a 75 gallon tank, if anything? And if nothing, then what could I put with an Oscar (just 1 in both instances) in a 90 gallon?

Excluding: clown loaches and plecos
Primarily looking for: Other cichlids (Jade Eye most likely is my choice), climbing perch maybe and definitely catfish

I'm really only looking for ....3 fish total, an Oscar, something else, and catfish.

So what can I get/what would be best?

Also, which eheim filter would work best in both instances? I'll probably end up getting the 90g just so I can have at least 3 fish. I'm planning on an external eheim filter...I just have NO idea which one.

www.eheim.com/external.htm

I'll also have a HOB filter capable of up to 110 gallons. But my primary concern is which eheim...or, if those all suck, if you could reccomend me a better one but within similar price range.

Sorry for the barrage of questions. Yes, I did read every helpful article and all the main ones...but I'd like to one EXACTLY what would go well in a 75g/90g.

There are literally hundreds of fish out there that you could probably put in with your Oscar in the 75 gallon tank, too many to mention. As long as had extremely good filtration, you can normally stop to the maximum your tank will allow. Obviously your nitrates will still rise quickly, you will just have thr filtration to remove the waste and toxins. I'm not a great lover of catfish in the smaller tanks, they are nocturnal and can often cause quite a disturbance at night when the other fish are asleep. Three silver dollars would be great with your Oscar in that tank. Jade eyed cichlids are absolutely adorable.

I use 2 Eheim 2028 canister filters which are rated up to 130 gallons, one of these would be perfect on your tank. They are not overly expensive either. Don't bother with any wet dry filters, they need too much maintenance and are best left for the marine set-ups.

Anyway, I'm sure other people will give you some recommendations as well

I LOVE catfish, and I know they can create quite a disturbance, but I'll be setting up the tank so it's suitable for their needs, but also is pretty sturdy and can't be knocked around or too much shit disturbed.

The reason I don't want a plec is simply because it's not as cool as a catfish (IMO lol) and they're so filthy, a plec with an O on top of that will be loads for my filter to handle. I also said no clown loaches simply because I've been keeping them for the better part of 3 years now and would just like something new. I know how awesome of fish they are though.

If I got SDs, they have to be kept in shoals obviously...so would an Oscar and 3 SDs AND a Jade Eye work? Or would I have to take out the Jade Eye? In a 90g.

Ty for answering the question about the filter though too, they can seem quite daunting at times when I see many models of 2 or 3 top-of-the-line brands at my store and I haven't the faintest clue which would be best for my needs.

What about a firemouth, blue acara or a texas cichlid(might get too large). I think all 3 of these are great looking fish expecially when they get larger

SD look big but as they are thin so i reckon you will get away with 3 SD's and a jade eye. Test your water regularly and if nitrates get too high do more water changes

They have got one mother of a Texas cichlid in a shop near me, over 12 inches long easily and built like side of your house. Do not get one of these unless you've got an extremely large tank.

I don't see why plecos are so bad. There are over 400 species, 216 commonly available in the hobby. Most plecos stay under 6 inches(that's not to say all do, i've seen 40'' plecos before...).
